One in a Maximilian

September 29th, 2009

My dog Max was always a valued part of the family. His chew proof dog beds were plentifully strewn around the house so that he could curl up with anywhere. We got the Chocolate Labrador when I was 7 years old, and for the next twelve years, he was as essential to the family as anyone. You can’t go through our family photo album without coming across a picture of Max, whether he’s chasing a ball outside (his favorite pastime) or sprawled out by the fireplace. Never has a dog given my family such cause for joy and frustration. He would do amazing things, like learn how to unlatch the gate in the backyard. But he was also do undesirable things, such as tearing up carefully planted gardens or destroying an attempt at a summer dinner on the deck by attempting to be the center of attention; this usually ending up with him smashing into the. By the time he was too weak to walk on his own and he had to be put to sleep, I was 19, and I had shared more than enough memories with him to make sure he’d never leave my heart.

Chicken for Dinner, Again

September 29th, 2009

Yesterday, I had chicken for dinner.  That’s what I ate yesterday and the day before yesterday.  Guess what I’ll be eating for dinner tonight.  That’s right, chicken for dinner, again.  I’m not complaining.  I like chicken.  Chicken is very versatile.  You can put chicken in just about anything, and it can take on a lot of forms.  I’m a vegetarian, but I can eat chicken because it’s not meat.  It’s poultry.  A lot of people make that mistake, but they’re wrong.  Chicken can be eaten as a sandwich or as a strip.  Chicken can be either very fattening or very healthy, depending on how you serve it.  Not many foods can do what the chicken does.

Nothing Like Spring

My favorite season is spring.  I enjoy spring because my birthday is in the spring.  Spring is the time when everything comes back—plants, flower, etc.  Everything is turning green in the springtime.  The weather is getting warmer, but not too warm.  I still need a jacket, and the mornings and evenings are cool.  There’s lots of rain, too.  The ground is wet, and the air is filled with that fresh spring rain scent.  Spring days aren’t long, but they aren’t short either.  Spring has a lot of growth going on in it.  New flowers are emerging, and the animals come back to play.  Even the days participate in this growth.  Each day is longer than the one before it.

What’s on the Task List?

September 21st, 2009

Today is just like any other day for me.  I am always working on a different project.  I write a task list at the beginning of the week or at the beginning of the day to figure out everything that must be done for the day.  Today, I had to review a thirty-nine page manuscript, fill out a few surveys, talk to my staff about the premiere issue of our ezine and write a few short stories and articles for the ezine.  I posted in a forum and wrote a few paragraphs on a story that I’ve been writing since August, but the day isn’t over, and there are plenty of things left for me to do.
